Claire Preston: A Legacy of Compassion and Transformation

The Building the Future Awards is honoured to pay tribute tonight to Claire Preston, who sadly passed away unexpectedly on 19th October 2024. Claire’s remarkable impact and passion have left an indelible mark on our industry. In her role as Head of Responsible Business, Claire joined GMI three years ago, embracing her position with boundless commitment and visionary drive. Her leadership quickly became a beacon, transforming GMI and the construction industry at large by demonstrating how meaningful change could be achieved through a focus on social value.
Claire’s legacy includes the extraordinary "Construction Cares" initiative, launched in 2022, which has since become a model across the sector. Through this initiative, Claire and her team enhanced the lives of over 80 care-experienced individuals. From the installation of Bleed Kits on sites to GMI DIY Workshops and Constructive Kickabout sessions for care leavers, Claire's influence is felt far and wide. Claire’s relentless dedication inspired her team to deliver over £250 million in social value last year alone, a testament to her belief that construction could, and should, be a force for good.
Through strategic partnerships with the Care Leaver Covenant, the 5% Club, and the Armed Forces Covenant, Claire positioned GMI as a leader in responsible business practices, pushing the industry to think more inclusively and act with greater integrity. Her work elevated standards across the board and continues to serve as a guiding example of what can be achieved when one is driven by a purpose larger than oneself.
Beyond her professional achievements, Claire was a friend and mentor to many—a true advocate for people. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched, and her vision will continue to inspire and shape the future of responsible construction. Tonight, we honour Claire’s memory, her contributions, and the powerful legacy she leaves behind.
